I Hope You Realize This Will Go Down On Your Permanent Record

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

What happens when young people who use social networking try to run for office? Well, it’s not pretty:

Last spring Emanuel Pleitez, 26, ran for California’s 32nd Congressional seat in a special election to replace Hilda Solis, the new secretary of labor.

During the campaign, one of Pleitez’s opponents, California State Sen. Gil Cedillo, discovered photos from Pleitez’s Facebook profile that showed Pleitez hanging around with various women at parties. The Cedillo campaign used the photos as the basis for a mailer that was sent to homes in the district. The mailer presented Pleitez as a partier, drinker and womanizer, among other smears.

EFF/Threat Level Needs Your Help

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

Remember back in 2006, when an insider accused AT&T of providing its customers’ phone and Internet traffic directly to the NSA for data mining? Do you also recall how the resultant lawsuit was dismissed because Congress voted to give telephone companies special protection from lawsuits of this kind?

The Electronic Frontier Foundation is investigating the behind-the-scenes machinations that led to Congress’s decision to grant immunity to telcos, and has made thousands of pages of records, that they received as a result of a FOIA request, available on their website.

Wired’s Threat Level blog is asking for help to pour over those documents. Details here.

Secret Treaties?

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

The U.S. may sign a new treaty, soon. (Yay!) It’s called ACTA, and what it actually says is supposed to be a secret. (Wha?) I guess the things your governmental representatives are agreeing to on your behalf is just none of your damn business. Except, of course, details of the treaty have been leaked, and boy is it a doozey. Phooey on this whole Internet thing, let’s get a samizdat going.

A Choice To Make

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

Which would you prefer? Zero tolerance policies that sometimes result in ridiculous violations of common sense, or: Inconsistently applied guidelines that allow personal bias to determine who gets in trouble, and what happens to those that do. That’s the choice. Of course, it may be a little more complicated than that. (I should probably state for the record [after linking to his blog twice in as many days] that everyone should probably bookmark Bruce Schneier’s website.)

Our Apologies to the Paranoid

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

From Bruce Schneier’s blog comes a link to this article: How Prosecutors Wiretap Wall Street:

Prosecutors are using the FBI’s massive surveillance system, DCSNet, which stands for Digital Collection System Network. According to Wired magazine, this system connects FBI wiretapping rooms to switches controlled by traditional land-line operators, internet-telephony providers and cellular companies. It can be used to instantly wiretap almost any communications device in the U.S. – wireless or tethered. In other words, you and I have no privacy.

While this information is not exactly novel, it’s amazing how rarely it ever gets mentioned.
